I was sitting at a caf\u00e9 next to a very pregnant woman.
She was drinking her third cup of coffee in a row. I couldn\u2019t take it anymore.
\u201cThink about your baby!\u201d I said.
She angrily replied, \u201cAre you an idiot? I\u2019m not pregnant.\u201d
I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me.
Her face turned red. Not embarrassed\u2014furious. \u201cYou don\u2019t know me,\u201d she said sharply, standing up and grabbing her bag. \u201cMind your own business next time.\u201d
The barista, a guy with shaggy hair and a sympathy-filled stare, gave me a slight shake of the head, like, you messed up. I just sat there, cheeks on fire, eyes locked on the tiny foam heart in my untouched latte.
It should\u2019ve ended there. But life\u2019s not that neat.
The next day, I saw her again. Same caf\u00e9, same corner seat. No coffee this time\u2014just water. She looked\u2026 different. Quieter. Tired.
I avoided eye contact. But as I stood up to leave, she waved me over.
I hesitated. She rolled her eyes and said, \u201cRelax. I\u2019m not gonna bite.\u201d
I walked over, hands awkward in my coat pockets.

I didn\u2019t say much\u2014just listened. Which, I\u2019ve learned, matters more than trying to fix things.
From then on, we\u2019d see each other every other day. I\u2019d bring her pastries, she\u2019d recommend me books. We didn\u2019t talk about that day much, but there was this silent truce between us. A friendship stitched out of an ugly beginning.
One rainy Thursday, she wasn\u2019t there.
Then another day passed. And another.
On the fifth day, I asked the barista if he\u2019d seen her.
\u201cRenna?\u201d he said, wiping down the counter. \u201cYeah. She\u2019s in the hospital. She left a note for you, actually.\u201d
He handed me a folded napkin. Her handwriting was neat, with a tiny heart drawn in the corner.
\u201cHey\u2014hospital room 208. If you\u2019ve got time.\u201d
I went.
She was pale but smiling. \u201cThey\u2019re removing the fibroids,\u201d she said. \u201cFinally. I\u2019ve been putting it off for months. Part fear, part\u2026 I don\u2019t even know.\u201d
I sat beside her, awkward again. \u201cYou\u2019re brave.\u201d
\u201cNo,\u201d she said. \u201cJust tired of being scared.\u201d
After the surgery, things got better for her. She looked lighter. Healthier. We started going on long walks. One day, she even laughed so hard she snorted\u2014this loud, honking laugh. I told her it sounded like a goose on a treadmill. She told me I sounded like a sitcom dad.
We weren\u2019t dating. But we were something. Something safe.
One summer evening, sitting on a park bench, she turned to me and said, \u201cDo you ever think things happen for a reason?\u201d

She raised an eyebrow.
