That day, I was doing my usual rounds when I noticed a little boy, maybe five years old, sitting quietly next to a woman. Something about him caught my attention. His tiny hands were trembling as he looked around, his eyes filled with fear. Then, he made a small hand gesture \u2014 one I instantly recognized. It was the silent sign for \u201cHELP\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I knelt beside him and softly asked, \u201cSweetheart, are you okay?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His lip quivered. \u201cIt\u2019s not my mom,\u201d he whispered, \u201cI lost my mom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before I could react, the woman next to him \u2014 startled awake \u2014 grabbed his arm tightly. My heart raced, but then she quickly explained in tears that she was his aunt. His mother had passed away from cancer just a few weeks earlier. The boy had been terrified, confused, and still expecting his mom to come back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I crouched beside him again, trying to find the right words \u2014 words that could comfort a heart so small and so broken. I pointed out the airplane window and said, \u201cDo you see that cloud out there? That\u2019s your mom waving at you. His eyes widened. Slowly, a shy smile spread across his face. He pressed his little hand to the window and waved. For the rest of the flight, he kept looking out \u2014 waving, giggling, whispering \u201cHi, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By the time we landed, he wasn\u2019t scared anymore. He hugged me tightly and said, \u201cThank you for helping me see her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
