Before I could say anything, Dad added, \u201cBy that, she means you need an upgrade.\u201d He looked at me, then at her, his meaning painfully clear. That was the moment I decided to act. I stood up and took an envelope from my wife\u2019s bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI have a surprise,\u201d I said. Mom frowned suspiciously and called my sister back into the room. Inside the envelope was a printout of their secret group chat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The bets on how long our marriage would last. The cruel insults about my wife. The photos they shared and mocked behind our backs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Their faces fell. My wife\u2019s hand was still in mine. Without waiting for excuses or denials, we walked out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No explanation could undo what they had said. The truth is, I had known about the chat for weeks. My youngest brother, who\u2019s studying abroad, had been added to it by mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Disgusted by their cruelty, he told me everything and sent me copies of their conversations. I had thought of confronting them privately, of asking them to apologize to my wife. But that dinner showed me how little respect they had for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
