We had saved for years, sacrificed vacations and luxuries, and made countless compromises to afford our new apartment. That night, standing in our cozy living room surrounded by friends and family, everything felt perfect \u2014 until his mother stood up in front of everyone and said something that made my stomach turn:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For a moment, I thought it was a joke. But then my husband nodded.

I felt my smile falter as he added, \u201cYeah\u2026 Katie really needs a fresh start. We could stay with your parents for a while until we get back on our feet again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The room went silent. A couple of guests glanced at me, waiting for me to laugh it off. But this wasn\u2019t a joke. I stood frozen, every eye on me, unsure how to respond without exploding. His mother smiled, certain she\u2019d won, and Katie looked at me with that smug little tilt of her head, as though she already had the keys in hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
