I was seated next to a woman who kept rocking back and forth, leaning her head down between her legs, and making whispered statements throughout the entire flight. It wasn\u2019t until the end that I heard her say, almost inaudibly, \u201cI have to do it. I have to say goodbye.\u201dI had noticed her the second I got to my seat\u20145A, window seat, aisle side blocked by this clearly distressed woman in 5B.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She looked to be in her late forties, wearing a long maroon cardigan and no makeup. Her hair was tied in a messy knot, and her eyes were red and puffy like she\u2019d either been crying or hadn\u2019t slept in days. She didn\u2019t say a word to me as I sat down.Just rocked slightly in her seat, whispering to herself like she was counting down to something. At first, I thought it might be a fear of flying. I\u2019ve known folks who get super nervous in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this was different. There was no deep breathing, no clutching the armrest or checking the safety card. Just rocking, whispering, and staring at the seatback in front of her like it held some kind of answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I tried not to stare. Put in my earbuds. Scrolled through the movie options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the energy coming off her was\u2026 tense. Not scary, not threatening. Just off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About halfway through the flight from Salt Lake City to Charlotte, she started murmuring names. I couldn\u2019t catch most of them. Maybe \u201cCaleb,\u201d \u201cNina,\u201d or \u201cJoseph.\u201d Could\u2019ve been anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At one point, I thought about pressing the call button and alerting a flight attendant, but something told me not to. She wasn\u2019t hurting anyone. And part of me\u2014maybe the nosy part\u2014wanted to see how this unfolded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we hit a rough patch of turbulence, she gripped the seat in front of her with white knuckles and closed her eyes tight. That\u2019s when I heard her say that thing\u2014\u201cI have to do it. I have to say goodbye.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something in her voice cracked open a part of me I wasn\u2019t expecting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I leaned slightly toward her, hesitated, and then asked, \u201cAre you okay?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She blinked at me like she forgot someone else was there. Then nodded. \u201cYeah,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI just need to do something that I should\u2019ve done a long time ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t pry. I figured if she wanted to say more, she would. It wasn\u2019t until we landed, still taxiing toward the gate, that she turned to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWould you do something strange?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I half-laughed, not sure what she meant. \u201cDepends how strange.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She smiled faintly. \u201cWould you walk with me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just\u2026 walk out of the airport with me. I need to see someone. And I think I need someone else there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just for five minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, I should\u2019ve said no. I didn\u2019t know this woman. I had a rental car to pick up and a long drive ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But something about her\u2014maybe the sadness in her eyes, or maybe just my own curiosity\u2014made me nod. \u201cOkay. I can walk with you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We exited the plane in silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She walked slowly, like each step had weight. At baggage claim, she didn\u2019t wait for any luggage. Just turned toward the exit and kept walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside, under the sticky August sun, she paused near a bench. Across the drop-off lane, a man stood near the pickup area. Tall, older, maybe early sixties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her whole body froze. \u201cThat\u2019s him,\u201d she said, almost inaudible. \u201cWho?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy dad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now I was really confused. \u201cOkay\u2026 is that a good thing?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t seen him in 27 years,\u201d she said. \u201cNot since I ran away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stared at her, mouth half-open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou ran away from home?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She nodded. \u201cAt 17. Stole cash from the garage drawer and left a note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Took a Greyhound to Phoenix. I was angry. He was strict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thought I\u2019d go back in a week. Then it turned into a year. Then it was too hard to go back at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My heart was thumping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI looked him up last month. Found him through a community group online. He never left Charlotte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still lives in the same damn house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDoes he know you\u2019re coming?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I looked at her. Looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was something in her eyes I hadn\u2019t seen earlier. Not fear. Not exactly regret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was more like exhaustion. \u201cWhat are you gonna say?\u201d I asked. \u201cI don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe nothing. I might just watch him walk away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I felt a lump in my throat. \u201cYou came all the way here to maybe not say anything?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI thought that might be enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She stepped off the curb. We crossed slowly. The man turned, caught sight of us, then squinted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She hesitated. Then kept walking. \u201cDad?\u201d she called out, voice cracking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He blinked. Frowned. \u201cSahana?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t expect what happened next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn\u2019t shout. Didn\u2019t cry. He just dropped the little duffel bag in his hand and walked to her like he\u2019d been rehearsing it in his head for 27 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He held her face in his hands. \u201cI thought you were dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
