He suffered from dehydration, anemia and a skin infection, among other issues. He cowered in his crate, staring down at his big paws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was heartbreaking to see a bear cub in such terrible condition,\u201d GCWR marketing and outreach manager Chelsea Engberg told The Dodo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets3.thrillist.com\/v1\/image\/3193006\/792x845\/scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\" alt=\"sick bear cub\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gold Country Wildlife Rescue<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rescuers conducted a thorough exam and came up with a treatment plan. They knew the bear\u2019s journey to health wasn\u2019t guaranteed, but they also knew they\u2019d do everything in their power to help him heal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a few weeks of treatment, the cub\u2019s curious face regained some of its former fuzz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile it might not seem like a big change, the fact that we are starting to see fur fuzz grow on his face is an exciting next step in his healing journey,\u201d GCWR wrote in a Facebook post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets3.thrillist.com\/v1\/image\/3193004\/568x876\/scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\" alt=\"bear cub \"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>More time went by, and rescuers became increasingly hopeful about the cub\u2019s recovery. Meanwhile, the cub began revealing his wild, playful side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He enjoyed using a variety of enrichment tools in his enclosure, including a kiddie pool and firehose hammock. Rescuers avoided contact with him as much as possible, ensuring the cub\u2019s best chance at returning to the wild. By February, the cub looked like a totally different bear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets3.thrillist.com\/v1\/image\/3193005\/792x790\/scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\" alt=\"bear cub \"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gold Country Wildlife Rescue<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are always amazed by the wild animals in our care, and this bear cub is one of the most amazing recoveries we have seen,\u201d Engberg said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts need a bit more time to determine the cub\u2019s future. Eventually, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife will decide whether he\u2019ll be released into the wild or whether he\u2019ll live in a protected sanctuary. Either way, it\u2019s clear that everyone has his best interests at heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, the cub remains at the rescue, where GCWR staff members are endlessly gratified by his resiliency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Gold-Country-Wildlife-Rescue.jpg?w=876&amp;h=576\" alt=\"Caretakers shocked to discover orphaned black bear cub with severe  infections: 'In a fragile state'\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe was in such poor condition when he arrived that, in many ways, he didn\u2019t even resemble a bear,\u201d Engberg said. \u201cThe fact that he\u2019s regrown so much of his fur and is remaining wild and not interested in humans is something that continues to make everyone at GCWR proud every day.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This past December, animal experts at Gold Country Wildlife Rescue (GCWR) in North Auburn, California, met a new rescue resident with a tragic story.
