On a scorching day in Cartagena, Colombia, a local was passing a bus station when something on top of a trash pile caught his eye. As he came closer, he realized it wasn\u2019t just bags and debris\u2014two tiny puppies were lying on the garbage, motionless and alone.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their mother was nowhere in sight. The babies, just around a month old, looked like they were sleeping, but it was clear\u2014they needed help, fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without hesitation, the man contacted Isla Animal<\/a>, a nearby rescue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Race Against Heat And Time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lina Patino, the founder of Isla Animal, didn\u2019t waste a second. She and her partner, Jennifer Ponsford, rushed to the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey were thrown away in a garbage can next to the bus terminal,\u201d Patino told The Dodo<\/em>. \u201cThey were destined to die\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rescuers scooped up the fragile pups and took them to the refuge center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fighting For Their Lives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At just one month old, the puppies were barely hanging on. Their bloated bellies showed signs of parasites, and ticks covered their tiny bodies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey were malnourished,\u201d Patino said. \u201cWe gave them food, water, antiparasitic medication, and applied tick repellent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the first 24 hours, the siblings\u2014now named Enrique and Beto\u2014barely moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey were so depressed and lethargic that I thought they wouldn\u2019t make it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Healing Begins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But then, something changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBy the third day, they had more energy than ever before,\u201d Patino said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They received medicated baths and began to show signs of life. The spark returned to their eyes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now nearly two months old, the brothers are tick-free, parasite-free, and finally getting the nutrition they so badly needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Living Their Puppy Dreams<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most days, Enrique and Beto can be found playing, snuggling, or curling up together for naps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soon, they\u2019ll receive their first round of vaccines, and then\u2014they\u2019ll be ready for forever homes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey counted on luck and met angels,\u201d Patino said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
