He had come for a piece of bread and a quiet place to rest. Now the rich man in front of him was looking at him as if he were a ghost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clara\u2019s foot slipped back into the water with a small splash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDad,\u201d she whispered, frightened now. \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her father slowly knelt in the gravel, ruining his polished trousers without noticing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShow me the necklace, son.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The boy flinched at the word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo one calls me that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His small fingers trembled as he pulled the silver chain from beneath his shirt. Half a heart hung from it, scratched and dull from years of being held too tightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clara\u2019s father reached inside his suit and removed the matching half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The pieces clicked together perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clara covered her mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The boy stared at the joined heart, confused and suddenly afraid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMy mother said my father didn\u2019t want me,\u201d he whispered. \u201cShe said this was all I had left of him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The man\u2019s face collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYour mother never said that.\u201d His voice broke. \u201cThe night Clara was hurt, my own father took you away. He told me my baby son died in the crash. He said I had already lost enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The boy\u2019s eyes filled with tears, but he shook his head as if refusing hope was safer than trusting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThen why was I hungry every day?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His father had no answer that could heal that sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He reached toward him, then stopped, afraid even his touch might feel undeserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI searched for a grave,\u201d he sobbed. \u201cI never knew I should have been searching for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Behind them, Clara suddenly dropped one crutch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her father turned in alarm, but the boy was already beside her, holding both her hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSlowly,\u201d he whispered. \u201cI\u2019ve got you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clara leaned forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One shaking step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She was crying now, smiling through it, because the first arms waiting for her were not her father\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They were her brother\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When she finally reached him, she wrapped both arms around his thin shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou came back for me,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The boy broke into silent sobs against her pink dress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t know I had anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Their father knelt beside them, unable to stop crying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou have me,\u201d he said. \u201cBoth of you. For the rest of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The boy looked at the grand stone house, then at the tub of water, then back at the man he was still afraid to call father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His voice was barely audible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCan I eat first?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His father pulled both children gently into his arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYes,\u201d he whispered through tears. \u201cAnd you will never be hungry again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
