The little girl ran into the room behind him and climbed onto the edge of the bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was the name he and Sofia once chose, whispering under summer rain like the future belonged to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then the hospital door opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A man in an expensive suit stepped inside, holding a folder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere you are,\u201d he said coldly. \u201cThe child comes with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lucia clung to Sofia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Esteban stepped between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man smiled. \u201cThe legal guardian. Sofia signed the papers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sofia shook her head weakly. \u201cHe forced me. He said if I didn\u2019t sign, Lucia would disappear before I died.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Esteban\u2019s eyes turned dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The man glanced at Esteban\u2019s tuxedo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou left your own wedding for a sick woman and a child you just met?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Esteban looked back at Lucia, whose small fingers were wrapped around her mother\u2019s hospital blanket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo,\u201d he said. \u201cI left a lie to find my family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The man\u2019s smile faded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Esteban took the folder, ripped it open, and saw his mother\u2019s signature on the witness line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His whole body went cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe knew.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sofia nodded, tears sliding into her hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Esteban turned toward the hallway, where his bride had just arrived with his mother behind her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His mother\u2019s face was pale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lucia hid behind his arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Esteban held the torn photo in one hand and the forged papers in the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then he looked at the woman who had raised him and whispered, \u201cYou let my child beg for help at my wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His mother said nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
