Anna pulled Ellie behind her so quickly the little girl stumbled in the snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo,\u201d Anna whispered. \u201cThat\u2019s not possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The man stood beneath the warm shop lights with tears running down his face, looking less like a stranger with every breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMy name is James,\u201d he said. \u201cSeven years ago, I was driving to the hospital when a truck hit my car.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Anna\u2019s hand rose to her mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
James took the silver star charm from the snow and opened it with shaking fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inside was a tiny photograph: Anna, younger and laughing, with her head resting against his shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ellie peeked around her mother\u2019s coat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThat\u2019s you, Mommy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Anna could not speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She had spent seven years believing James had abandoned her before their daughter was born. His mother had come to the hospital with a cold face and a sealed envelope, telling Anna he had died on impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inside the envelope was money and one sentence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He never wanted the child.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Anna had returned it unopened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She had raised Ellie alone, holding onto her pride until pride could no longer pay rent or keep winter from entering their coats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n James stared at his daughter\u2019s worn boots and torn gloves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI woke up months later,\u201d he said, his voice collapsing. \u201cMy family told me you had taken the baby and disappeared. They said you wanted nothing to do with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Anna shook her head slowly, tears falling now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI waited for you,\u201d she whispered. \u201cI kept waiting until waiting became too painful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ellie looked from one broken adult to the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMommy\u2026\u201d Her voice was small. \u201cIs he really my daddy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Anna knelt in front of her daughter, trying to answer, but grief stole every word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n James did not move closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He simply dropped to his knees in the snow, still several feet away, and held out the little silver charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI bought two of these the day I found out you were going to be born,\u201d he told Ellie. \u201cOne for your mother. One for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ellie touched the matching charm at her neck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMom said my daddy gave this to me before he went to heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n James covered his mouth as a sob escaped him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI tried to come home to you,\u201d he whispered. \u201cI swear I did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The little girl studied his crying face with the careful seriousness of a child who had learned life could change without warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then she asked, \u201cWere you going to buy someone that doll?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n James looked toward the glowing window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNo,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I would like to buy it for my daughter\u2026 if she lets me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ellie\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She looked up at Anna first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Even with a dream inches away, she would not reach for happiness without her mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Anna brushed the snow from Ellie\u2019s hair, shaking with tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cGo on, baby.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ellie turned back toward James.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI don\u2019t need the doll first,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He held his breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She took one uncertain step through the snow and lifted her arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI think I need a hug first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n James broke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He gathered his daughter into his coat as gently as if she were made of glass.
