The man followed her eyes to the parking lot.
A dark car sat near the curb with its hazard lights blinking faintly in the rain.
The girl held the babies tighter.
“Mom said not to tell,” she whispered. “She said if they found us, they’d separate us.”
The officer’s face changed.
“Who would separate you?”
The girl’s voice broke.
“Everybody.”
The man in the suit stood slowly.
“Take me to her.”
Outside, the girl led them to the car.
Inside, a young woman lay across the front seat, pale and barely conscious, one hand still wrapped around an empty baby bottle.
The girl pressed her face to the window.
“Mommy, I got the milk.”
The man stopped breathing.
He stared at the woman’s face.
Then at the tiny silver necklace around her neck.
“No,” he whispered.
The officer looked at him.
“You know her?”
The man’s hands began to shake.
“That’s my daughter.”
The little girl turned sharply.
“What?”
His eyes filled.
“She disappeared six years ago. Her mother told me she ran away because she hated me.”
The girl shook her head.
“Mom said Grandpa never came.”
The man covered his mouth as the truth hit him.
His ex-wife had lied.
To him.
To his daughter.
To these children.
He opened the car door and touched the young woman’s face.
“Maya.”
Her eyes barely opened.
“Dad?”
The little girl started crying.
The officer immediately called for help.
The man turned back to the child and gently took the milk from her shaking hands.
“You don’t have to steal food anymore.”
She looked at him like she didn’t know how to believe safe words.
“What about my brothers?”
He looked at the babies, then at his daughter fighting to stay awake.
His voice broke.
“They’re coming home with me too.”
The girl’s knees almost gave out.
And under the harsh lights of a convenience store, a child who thought she was about to lose her family found the one person who had been searching for them all along.
